Unprecedented Response to Early Bird Insurance

Early Bird Travel InsuranceFollowing my recommendation in our summer issue to opt for our Early Bird Travel Insurance®, we witnessed an overwhelming response with a surge in applications and internet sales. Our projections were not only met but exceeded, thanks to the robust performance of our sophisticated online systems, which handled consistently high-volume traffic exceptionally well.

Navigating Staffing Challenges

Despite being short-staffed, a result of both COVID-19 impacts and a general disinterest in employment opportunities, our team faced significant challenges in delivering the service excellence you deserve. I appreciate your patience during what felt like a tsunami of demand. My daily walkthroughs in the office confirmed that, despite these challenges, no significant issues arose that I can recall today.

Special Underwriting Department Overwhelmed

This year, our Special Underwriting Department was particularly overwhelmed, dealing with an influx of new snowbirds presenting complex health issues, including recent heart attacks, cancer diagnoses, and late-onset diabetes, and other unstable pre-existing conditions that may have affected their coverage. While we strive to accommodate most applicants, the reality is that high risk translates to higher premiums—still, these are considerably lower than potential medical bills that can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Misinformation in the Media

I am concerned about the increasing number of “snowbird” articles in mainstream media and online platforms that often cite unreliable sources. It baffles me why these outlets do not simply reach out to the Canadian Snowbird Association(snowbirds.org) or Medipac directly for accurate travel insurance information. We are always ready to provide our expertise and opinions.

What Makes Genuine Travel Insurance Experts?

It’s amusing yet troubling when entities like banks or auto clubs claim to be experts in travel insurance – areas outside their core expertise. Similarly, life insurance agents and auto/home brokers are often more motivated by high commissions rather than genuine expertise in travel insurance.

The Value of Accurate Information

Over the years, some have advised me against criticizing the competition. However, if sharing accurate information can prevent even one person from facing a catastrophic $300,000 medical bill, I believe it’s worth it. That’s my justification for being candid and perhaps a bit controversial.

Season’s Greetings

As we approach the holiday season, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a joyful and healthy new year to all our clients and readers. May your holidays be merry, and the new year filled with health and happiness.
